The Society of Financial Service Professionals is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors through its website: www.learningmarket.org.

The Society offers programs at intermediate to advanced levels of continuing professional education. Although no pre-requisite course or advanced preparation is needed to participate in any program, knowledge of, or experience in, the program topic is required.

Program Overview

The retirement plan industry today talks a great deal about fiduciary risk and outsourcing but in a lopsided way: the conversation is all about investment process even though the overwhelming majority of the pain and problems are due to administration. There is an unmet need for genuine help with respect to the client's administrative and supervisory burden and solutions are emerging to meet that need. What does this actually mean? How much difference is there between a 3(16) Administrator and a traditional TPA? The session explores these questions as well as the implications of outsourcing all three of the principal fiduciary roles: ERISA Sec. 402(a) Named Fiduciary, 3(16) Administrator, and Discretionary Trustee. We discuss outsourcing in the context of both single and multiple employer plans.

Pete Swisher, CFP®, CPC is a pension consultant and financial planner known nationally for his work on retirement plan governance. He is the author of 401(k) Fiduciary Governance: An Advisor's Guide , a handbook on fiduciary law and practice for retirement plan specialists and fiduciaries. The Guide is the final textbook in ASPPA's Qualified Plan Financial Consultant curriculum. Pete is a prolific writer and speaker for the financial community, having published over thirty white papers and articles and delivered over fifty addresses to the retirement plan, financial planning, and business communities in the past decade. As senior vice president and national sales director for Pentegra Retirement Services, Pete leads the development of fiduciary outsourcing solutions and custom multiple employer plans (MEPs) for retirement plan advisors, service providers, and employers nationwide. Pete is past president of the Lexington Employee Benefits Council and is an active member of the Financial Planning Association, NAPA, and ASPPA.
