VTC: Security in Retirement: Healthy, Wealthy and Wise (September 2005)

For a generation of Americans retirement looms as some object in the distance, advancing but not quite distinct. Inundated by Madison Avenue with all kinds of targeted marketing, all these folks really want is someone to explain how the years that follow a lifetime of hard work can be secure, healthy, and happy. Financial advisers have become that link to reality. In advising clients, they need to know the whole person, assess their financial goals and objectives, and provide the appropriate products and services to help the individual make an informed decision.

It seems an easy formula; however, retirement needs can only be assessed on an individual basis. This is the challenge facing financial advisers today. Armed with sophisticated analyses and simulations to wow clients, the crucial issue remains communicating suitable strategies and investment choices to help retirees live a lifestyle that allows them to flourish in the years ahead.

Using lecture, panel discussion, and Q&A, a team of experts will explore many facets of the retirement planning issue. After completing this program, you will be able to:

  • Define the term “security” in relation to the new definition of retirement
  • Identify the challenges facing the future of Social Security benefits, such as the inadequacies in the system and changes in family work patterns
  • Examine the trends in the 401(k) landscape
  • Understand how implementing “what if” scenarios can help your client’s decisions
  • Identify minimum required distribution (MRD) strategies and investment options that may be suitable for the client
