Maximizing Initial Withdrawal Rates: Advising Clients and Making Decisions with Confidence in Turbulent Times(August 12, 2009 Audio Conference)

Program Overview
"How much can I withdraw from my portfolio and still be ok?" is one of the most important and complex questions a client can ask their financial planner … especially in these times!

The impact of applying systematic Decision Rules in the management of portfolio distributions has been one of financial planning’s hottest topics since 2004 when our speaker, Jonathan Guyton, CFP® and Principal of Cornerstone Wealth Advisors, Inc. in Minneapolis, published his award-winning research which established higher "safe" initial withdrawal rates than previously published results.

In March 2006, along with computer scientist William Klinger, Mr. Guyton published a follow-up work in the Journal of Financial Planning. Testing various balanced portfolios utilizing Monte Carlo analysis, this research validated his original findings and introduced two Decision Rules (the "Capital Preservation Rule" and the "Prosperity Rule") which act as "guardrails" that support higher initial withdrawal rates, introduce flexibility in distribution amounts and allow for purchasing power maintenance and probabilities of success well above 95%.

Attendees will Learn:

  • How to apply cutting-edge behavior-based research in client retirement planning
  • How to make real-time decisions about when distributions should be adjusted
  • How these decision rules have helped clients to weather the recent economic storms
  • How to clearly and simply communicate these decision rules to your clients
  • The advantages of such withdrawal policies in gaining and retaining clients
